Comfort, imagination, and a house that grew up listening to the land.
Built in collaboration with the landscape itself, the Big House was thoughtfully placed with deep respect for the land — honoring its natural flow, its beauty, and the sacredness of the place that came before it.
Every room is its own experience: a neutral canvas waiting for stories, creativity, connection, and moments of inspiration. Throughout the home you’ll discover hidden gems, thoughtful details, and spaces designed to invite curiosity and wonder.
Book the center for a day, a half-day, an evening, or a week for a small number of overnight guests.
Inside & Outside
The practical details behind a meaningful gathering.
Built in 1980 on the rim above the Animas River, the Big House combines generous gathering spaces both inside and outside in the gardens. Views toward the La Plata Mountains off the back deck or just a short walk to the rim. The main entrance is designed around 200 yr old Hacienda courtyard doors from central Mexico. The interior maintains the Mexican theme with saltillo tile, hand carved mesquite doors, and indigenous art work. A yoga and exercise solarium is filled with flowering plants and wide open doors. Green houses surround the master side of the house for in house sauna and year round food growing capacity.
01
A kitchen made for gathering
A spacious kitchen with 2 gas cooktops 6 top range, gas ovens, double electric oven, steamer cabinet, ice makers, and cool kitchen/prep area and stand alone bar. Walk in refrigerator and commercial services area is in the next phase of renovations. The open-concept design of our kitchen creates a seamless flow into the main gathering areas, making it the perfect setting for interactive cooking classes and group demonstrations. By design, this space embraces the natural tendency for guests to congregate near the heart of the home, ensuring that the kitchen serves as a comfortable, social hub where culinary education and shared moments happen side-by-side.
02
Guest facilities
Four bathrooms and three showers support retreats, workshops, classes, fundraisers, and private gatherings.
03
The orchard, fruit bush and vegetable garden
Peach, apple, and pear trees grow beside the house among willow and cottonwood—an easy extension of the indoor gathering spaces.
04
Music room fit for a grand piano and string quartets.
Nestled within the Big House, the music room is a sanctuary designed for resonance, focus, and deep creative flow. At its heart sits a beautifully tuned 1910 Steinway grand piano, taking center stage in a room engineered to capture every delicate overtone.
The room’s acoustics are truly to die for—crisp, warm, and expressive, whether filling the space with the rich dynamics of a full string quartet or the softest solo melody. Expansive windows frame sweeping views of the surrounding grounds, blurring the line between indoors and out. As you sit at the keys, the serene feeling of playing directly in nature takes over, letting the tranquil spirit of the land guide every note.
